Dr Bernadette Rock is the founder of HeyDay Weight Loss. A practical weight management system that concentrates on re-formatting people’s eating habits and relationships with food. * She holds a Masters in Sociology and Social Research and a PhD in Sociology. In 2012, she began researching a new model that would help people develop a healthy relationship with food and weight. ∗
Dr Bernadette Rock has overseen extensive qualitative and quantitative research which was carried out with input from the Smurfit School of Business to examine the needs of men and women around food and weight. Her own personal experiences overcoming weight challenges and research indicated that a focus on diet only reinforces difficulties with weight and eating habits.
Furthermore, she observed that diets serve to harm self-esteem and hinder our ability to care for ourselves. She drew strongly on sociological theory and acceptance-based strategies, an essential component of which is person-centred care and the empowerment of the person. Following this research, Dr Bernadette set about set about developing the ‘Heyday’ program which takes the focus off food and diets.
Recently, Dr Bernadette Rock has worked in conjunction with Professor Donal O’Shea, consultant endocrinologist and Director of the Weight Management Clinic at St Columcille’s Hospital in Loughlinstown, Co Dublin.
Dr Bernadette Rock worked here with a group of morbidly obese patients who were on a waiting list for bariatric surgery.
Over time, the beneficial outcomes of the HeyDay workshops became very apparent, with a focus on self-acceptance and self-confidence, these patients gradually felt more empowered and were gradually able to let go of their bad eating habits and focus on weight loss. *
Dr Bernadette Rock partners with Dietitian, Paula Mee, in delivering workshop programs. She is a regular media contributor on weight management and her articles have been covered by The Huffington Post.
